PEARLAND — Pearland continue to improve each week and it was evident in the Oilers' 42-10 District 24-5A win over Clear Brook (3-6, 2-4) at The Rig in the final home game of the regular season.
Jackie Robinson (14-101, 1TD) and Adam Saunders (15-107, 1 TD) combined for 208 yards rushing and two scores while QB Jake Garner was 11-of-17 for 161 yards and one score.
It took a little while for Pearland to get untracked as Garner scored on a 1-yard keeper with 1:38 left in the opening period. Michael Winstead added the extra point for an early 7-0 lead.
Clear Brook got a 50-yard field goal from Yannis Routsas who took advantage of a huge wind behind his back to close the gap to 7-3 with 7:20 left in the second quarter.
The Oilers' defense shut the Wolverines down for the rest of the first half while the Pearland offense crossed the goal line two more times before intermission.
Saunders scored on a 5-yard run and Garner threw a beautiful 43-yard scoring pass to Jared Mapps with 1:28 left. Winstead booted both PATs to give Pearland a solid 21-3 lead at the half.
Pearland got the second half kickoff and promptly moved down the field to score on a 1-yard plunge by Robinson with 9:04 left in the third quarter making the score 28-3. The drive was 64 yards in six plays sparked with a big play coming on a 41-yard run by Robinson.
Clear Brook began their first possession of the second half and moved 70-yards in nine plays for a score by Jordan Tezino with 4:00 minutes left in the third period to cut the lead to 28-10.
That would be all the scoring for the Wolverines while Pearland scored 14 more points in the final stanza.
With 4:06 left in the game, Kevin Washington made a sensational 22-yard scoring run and then Pearland's defense scored with 3:10 left in the game as Cornelius Barber picked up a Brook fumble and rambled 26-yards for the final touchdown making the final 42-10.
Mapps led the Pearland receiving corps with five catches for 78 yards. Saunders had two catches for 30 yards. Washington had one grab for 32 yards. John Gibberman had one catch for nine yards. Scott May had one catch for six yards and Dominic Rabago had one grab for six yards.
The Oilers (7-2, 5-1) close out the regular season at Alvin on November 4 at Alvin Memorial Stadium at 7:00 p.m. Alvin lost to Brazoswood last week 35-14 and is currently 4-5 overall and 2-4 in league play.

STRETCHING OUT FOR THE CATCH - Pearland's Adam Saunders gives it 100 percent as he goes to the air to grab a pass for the Oilers. Saunders is one of the most versatile players Pearland has this season. Saunders scored a TD on a 5-yard run, had 107 yards rushing on 15 carries, and caught 2 passes for 30 yards in helping Pearland get a 42-10 win over Clear Brook. Pearland closes out the regular season on Friday at Alvin Memorial Stadium against Alvin (4-5, 2-4) at 7:00 p.m. The Oilers (7-2, 5-1) has already secured their place in the post-season.
