The District 22-5A showdown between Pearland and Pasadena Memorial was expected to be close according to some pre-game media hype since both teams came into the battle with identical 6-1 overall marks. Pearland was 4-0 in the district standings while Memorial was 3-1 with their lone loss was to Manvel (35-14).
But it appears that the Oilers are seeing several players beginning to peak at the right time with the defense continuing to be a formidable wall to opposing teams.
One Pearland player who has shown remarkable talent is junior running back Hyden Cole (6-0, 215) who has scored six touchdowns and rushed for 143 yards over the past two games. Cole has shown power and nifty moves in helping the Oilers win in dominating fashion.
Senior Kevin Washington also raised his level of play against the Mavericks hauling in two touchdown passes from QB Jacob Garner covering 27 and 36-yards.
The Oilers came out swinging in this showdown early for a 21-7 lead at the end of the opening twelve minutes of action.
Garner scored on a 2-yard run at the 7:40 mark for a 7-0 lead.
Jordan Wyatt answered for Memorial with a 1-yard run to knot up the game 7-7.
Cole would go on his scoring spree with two scores covering 2 and 3-yards to close out the first period.
The Oilers didn't score in the second period while Memorial hit a 38-yard field goal by Alex Cruz to close the gap at 21-10 at intermission.
Pearland outscored the home team 21-6 in the second half as Washington posted his two scores in the third quarter to build a comfortable 35-10 lead while the Pearland defense shut down Memorial in the third quarter.
With 3:37 remaining in the final frame, Devante Dotson stepped in front of a Memorial receiver for a sensational 70-yard interception for a touchdown to vault the Oilers to a 42-10 advantage.
Memorial's leading ball carrier Reggie Turner scored a meaningless touchdown with 3:14 left in the game to make the final score 42-16.
Pearland had 318 total yards while the Mavericks were held to only 161 total yards including 27 passing yards.
Pearland's defense came up with three interceptions with Dotson getting two while Marlon Walls got the other.
Garner was 9-of-13 passing for 134 yards and two scores with one INT while rushing for 93 yards on 13 carries and one TD.
Cole finished with six carries for 44 yards and two scores. Washington had three receptions for 76 yards and two TDs.
Pearland (7-1, 5-0) will host Manvel (7-1, 5-0) on Friday, November 2 at The Rig in a showdown that will determine the District 22-5A championship. The stadium will probably be a sellout so Pearland fans need to purchase tickets early to support the Oilers.
