Pearland still has Ball High and Clear Brook in their path
and head coach Tony Heath has been a master getting his teams
focused to play one game at a time. The Oilers will host Ball
High on Friday, November 3 at 7:00 p.m. at The Rig and then
will travel to District Stadium on Friday, November 10 to take
on the Wolverines at 7:00 p.m.
The Oilers left no doubt as to who would win their game against
Alvin. Despite the score being only 14-0 at halftime, the Pearland
defense stepped up their effort to another level as the Yellowjackets
didn't get a first down until there was 3:34 left in the second
quarter.
The Pearland offense set up their first possession of the game
at their own 25. The Oilers used 12 plays to get to the Alvin
16. Facing fourth-and-five, the Alvin defense stopped Fozzy
Whittaker a yard short of the first down to take over at their
own 13.
But the Oilers defense held the Jackets to minus-7 yards on
their first three plays.
Following a 33 yard punt, the Oilers had a short field starting
at the Alvin 39. It took only four plays for Pearland to find
paydirt as quarterback Sam Proctor lofted a beautiful pass that
found the arms of sophomore Kevin Miller down the left sidelide
for a 27-yard scoring toss. Robbie Hersh hit the extra point
for a 7-0 lead with 1:49 left in the first quarter.
Both teams traded punts and then the Oilers took advantage
of an Alvin fumble that was recovered by Chris Bogs at the Pearland
40.
The Oilers used a nine-play, 60-yard drive to score capped off
by a one-yard plunge by James Williford with 4:22 remaining
before the intermission. Hersh booted the extra point giving
the Oilers a 14-0 lead at halftime.
Pearland almost added a field goal before halftime, but missed
on a 41-yarder. The attempt was set up by an interception by
Pearland's Lance Hayes.
The Jackets got the second half kickoff and began at their
own 29. A pass from quarterback Greg Watkins to Tom Hughes with
9:33 left in the third quarter marked the first completion for
the Jackets in the game. Alvin moved the ball to the Oilers'
44, but a fourth-and-three pass fell harmless to the ground
giving the ball back to the Oilers.
Both teams traded punts and then the Oilers moved from their
own 20 to the Alvin 33. On first down, sophomore running back
Kasey Carrier showed why he is an up and coming star as he found
a huge hole through the right side of the Alvin defense and
then cut sharply back to his left to out race the Alvin secondary
for a crowd-pleasing score. Hersh hit the extra point to give
Pearland a 21-0 lead with 11:30 remaining in the game.
Carrier added a second score with 5:03 left in the contest
on a two-yard run to give the Oilers a comfortable 28-0 lead.
The scoring drive was a nine-play, 74-yard drive with Carrier
carrying most of the load with four totes for 48 yards and the
score.
With the game soundly in the hands of the Oilers, the Jackets
showed they weren't going to quit as Watkins scored on a nine-yard
run with only 39 seconds left in the game. The extra point was
good and the 28-7 final score was posted at Memorial Stadium
in Alvin.
Pearland running back Fozzy Whittaker, who broke the PHS rushing
mark the previous week with 415 yards, had a solid outing with
21 carries for 131 yards. James Williford, who usually opens
holes for Whittaker, had an outstanding showing with eight carries
for 51 yards and one score. Carrier added five totes for 85
yards and two TDs. Kevin Miller had two catches for 34 yards
and one score. The Oilers racked up 17 first downs and 354 total
yards.
