No. 9 Pearland spears the Marlins 26-0

The No. 9 area-ranked Pearland Oilers used a smothering defense while the offense moved to a more balanced attack that produced a 26-0 shutout over the Madison Marlins.

It didn't take long for the Oilers to put points on the board as Kasey Carrier carried six times with the final tote covering 26 yards with 5:25 remaining the first quarter for a 7-0 lead as Robbie Hersh added the extra point.

The Oilers struggled on offense for part of the first half, but the defense stepped up to make sure that the Marlins didn't capitalize on Pearland's inability to sustain several drives until late in the second period.

With 2:29 remaining in the first half, quarterback Sam Allen dropped back at the Marlin 43 and tossed a perfect pass to Kevin Miller who was tackled from behind at the three-yard line. Three plays later, Carrier bolted across the goal line for a one-yard score. Hersh hit the extra point giving the Oilers a 14-0 cushion at intermission.
The short drive was set up by an interception by Gary Robertson.

Madison was held to only 18 yards rushing while completing only 2-of-4 passing for 16 yards for a total of 34 yards.

Pearland went three-and-out on their first possession. Madison took over on their own 38 following an eight yard punt.

The Marlins made the biggest drive of the game that came to a halt at the Pearland 45.
With 5:26 left in the third period, the Oilers set up the offense at their own 15. It took nine-plays to cover 85 yards as Carrier scored his third touchdown of the game on a four-yard run. The drive was sparked by another Allen to Miller pass completion covering 40 yards. Hersh booted the extra point giving the Oilers a 21-0 advantage at the 1:30 mark of the third quarter.

Madison held a deep scoring threat by the Oilers to get the ball at their own 23. After picking up 15 yards, the Madison quarterback tossed a pass down field that was picked off by Nick Saenz who picked up some good blocking. The UH pledge was set free on a block by Bruce Honore to complete the 55-yard scoring interception. The extra point missed the mark as the 26-0 final score was posted with 6:16 left in the game.

Carrier continues his outstanding season with 127 yards on 22 carries and three TDs. Sam Allen looked a lot more comfortable passing hitting 6-of-11 for 144 yards. Kevin Miller had two catches for 76 yards while Kevin Davis had two grabs for 12 yards and Nathan Gigee added one catch for 16 yards.

Josh Gonzales picked up 22 yards on six totes. Jacob Peters had three carries for 14 yards while Justin Wilson added 18 yards on five carries.

Pearland finished with 19 first downs and 329 total yards while the Marlins were held to seven first downs and 100 total yards.

The Oilers (2-0) will host Spring Branch Memorial on Friday, September 14 at The Rig at 7:00 p.m.

Memorial opened their season with a 21-14 win over Jersey Village.
