Head
Coach - Tony Heath
Pearland head coach Tony Heath begins his 11th year at the helm
of the Pearland Oilers football and has engineered one of the greatest
turnarounds in Texas high school football history. After the Oilers
were 6-63-1 from 1990-1996 - Heath has seen his Pearland teams register
a ten-year record of 87-32 making him the winningest coach in PHS
history with the 2001 squad setting a new PHS record at 13-1 with
a trip to the Class 5A Division I state semifinals. The Oilers won
the District 24-5A crown that season with a perfect 7-0 mark and
won a first-ever Class 5A Region III title.
Heath received District 24-5A and the Houston Chronicle's "Coach
of the Year" honors in 2001. He has been a "Coach of the
Year" finalist by the Touchdown Club of Houston in 2000, 2001,
2002, 2003, 2005, and 2006.
Pearland
is going for a record eighth consecutive playoff appearance in
2007. The Oilers were District 24-5A co-champions in 2004 and
won the title in 2005 with a perfect 10-0 regular season mark
for only the third time in school history. All four sub-varsity
teams captured the district title in their respective levels (Junior
Varsity and Freshman) in 2005. All the teams (Varsity, JV, Freshman)
finished the regular season with an unprecendented 40-0-2 overall
record. Heath was District 24-5A "Coach of the Year"
in 2005.
In
2006, the Oilers finished second in the District 24-5A standings
at 4-2 after suffering two straight uncharacteristic losses to
begin league action. Pearland posted a 4-0 non-district record
to begin the season including a win over eventual 2006 state 4A
Division II champion La Marque (15-1). The Oilers reeled off eight
straight victories capped off with a sensational 16-15 win over
Cy-Fair for the 5A Division I Region III crown sending them to
the 5A Division I state semifinal contest for the second time
in school history against Austin Westlake. Pearland fell 35-32
in an incredible battle to finish with a 12-3 season mark. The
playoff drive also included a second-round win over No. 5 state-ranked
North Shore (21-14). Pearland finished ranked No. 4 in the state.
Over
the past eight years, Heath and the Pearland Oilers have an 82-16
record making them one of the top five winningest football programs
in the Houston area. The Oilers are favored to win the 24-5A title
in 2007 and will no doubt make a run in the playoffs once again.
