Area gridiron standouts selected to TSWA All-State teams

The Dawson Eagles and the Pearland Oilers both advanced to the playoffs this past season.

The Oilers won the District 22-6A crown with a perfect 8-0 mark while going 10-0 for the regular season. Pearland beat FB Travis 59-27 in the bi-district round and came up short to Dickinson 28-21 in the area round to finish 11-1. This was the 26th straight year Pearland advanced to the post-season.

The Eagles finished second in the 22-6A standings and finished with an 8-3 mark after losing a heartbreaker to Fort Bend Ridge Point 21-16 in the bi-district contest.

Recently, the Texas Sports Writers Association released their annual All-State teams for the state of Texas and Pearland had four players and Dawson had one player named to these prestigious teams.

Here are the players selected All-State.

Senior LB Joseph Credit was selected to the All-State first-team defensive squad. Credit had 100 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, nine sacks, 25 quarterback pressures, four pass breakups, one caused fumble, two fumble recoveries, one interception and one interception returned for a touchdown. He was selected as the 22-6A MVP, a defensive finalist with the Houston TD Club, and an All-Greater Houston pick. His career as an Oiler produced 227 tackles, 39 tackles for loss, 47 QB pressures, 12 sacks, and five pass breakups. Credit is a Kansas University signee.

Senior RB Ja’Maurey Champion was a third-team selection. Champion had 194 carries for 1,610 yards (8.3 yards per carry), 25 touchdowns and was a Houston TD Club offensive finalist. Champion will continue his education and playing career for Texas A&M at Kingsville.

Senior OL Nick Howard was selected as an honorable mention. Howard had 17 knockdowns and allowed only one sack. He was also an All-Greater Houston pick. He will continue his education at the next level as a University of Pittsburg signee.

Senior DL Amari Wilks was selected as an honorable mention. Wilks had 63 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 12 QB pressures, and one blocked kick. For his career he had 119 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, 19 QB pressures, one fumble recovery, and two pass breakups. Wilks is a Louisiana Tech signee.
