Pearland trounces Sam Rayburn 64-0 in league opener

  Sam Rayburn started the game against Pearland at their own 30. The Texans gained five yards in three plays and punted on fourth down.
    Pearland’s Ed Smith gathered in the punt on his own 35-yard line and 65-yards later crossed the Rayburn goal line giving the Oilers a quick 7-0 lead following the PAT by Holden Macneish with 9:29 left in the opening quarter.
    Rayburn went three and out following the Pearland kickoff giving the Oilers their first possession of the game at their own 42.
    On the first play of the game, QB Jake Westmoreland dropped back to find WR Kaleb Samuels streaking down the middle of the field for a 51-yard pass completion to the Texans 6-yard line.
    Senior RB Ja’Maurey Champion scored on the next play for a 14-0 lead with 6:16 left in the first period.
    The Pearland defense forced Rayburn to punt after only three plays where the Oilers began their next possession at the Texans 37.
    This time Westmoreland dropped back and found Jordan (Jet) Hernandez on a 37-yard scoring bomb to make the score 21-0 with 3:36 remaining in the first quarter.
    With 11:49 left in the second stanza, Royce Swan would score on a 6-yard dash to complete the three-play, 47-yard drive highlighted by a Westmoreland to The Jet completion to the Texans 6.
    The Oilers would score three more times before the end of the first half when Swan scored his second TD on an 11-yard run, Champion would add an 8-yard scoring run, and Champion would close out the half with a 14-yard run with 1:52 left in the half to make the score 51-0 at intermission.
    “The goal last week against Memorial was for us to play clean football in all three phases of the game and I feel like we did,” said head coach B.J. Gotte.
    “We are now looking to build on that in our second district game against Alvin to have consistent execution on offense, defense, and special teams.”
    The Oilers would add 13 more points in the second half when Swan scored his third touchdown on the game on a 6-yard run with 7:29 left in the third and then Macneish booted two field goals from 30 and 21 yards to post the final 64-0 score with 1:11 left in the fourth period.
    Westmoreland was 3-for-7 passing for 133 yards and one TD while Kaleb Smith was 4-for-5 for 51 yards.
    Champion had seven carries for 61 yards and three touchdowns while Swan had seven totes for 54 yards and three scores.
    Hernandez had two catches for 83 yards and one TD while Samuels had one grab for 51 yards.
    Pearland finished with 371 yards of total offense while the Oiler defense held the Texans to 73 yards rushing and no yards passing.

The Oilers (3-0) will take the short drive south on 35 to face the Alvin Yellowjackets (1-2) on Thursday, September 18 with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff time.
