Pearland Football 2020

              A Word from Our Superindendent . . .

ON BEHALF OF the Pearland ISD Board and Administra-
tion, I welcome everyone here tonight. In some ways, this
season is historic, recognizing that unprecedented safety
measures are required – and that everyone who attends
shares this responsibility. With limited attendance and
social distancing, each of us bears a greater burden to
encourage, applaud and protect our students – and one
another. Our desire is that both our community and visi-
tors will remember this night for its excitement and for the
good will and graciousness exhibited by many.

Our school district is well known for placing a high em-
Dr. John Kelly phasis on “grit” and specifically on a "growth mindset."
This means “working strenuously toward challenges, maintaining effort and inter-
est over years despite failure, adversity and plateaus in progress.” We believe our
lives are better focused on improvement and growth rather than on a “fixed” or static
sense of our abilities and achievements. We strive to teach and model these things
on and off this field tonight!

Both of our mighty football teams (Dawson and Pearland) compete in the Texas 6A
division containing the biggest and best high school football teams in the nation. And
we know that our bands, cheerleaders, dancers, and many others also make this
night special. In short, we’re honored to showcase such a storied history of athletic,
extra-curricular, academic, and fine arts accomplishment.

It is good to remember that our teachers, coaches, staff, and others are surrounded
by hundreds of students, often on a daily basis. Their courage is on display as they
seek to provide guidance and care in the midst of these historic difficulties.

Inside each of us is a higher “scoreboard” capable of appreciating the hard work
and integrity necessary for accomplishment in all worthy lifetime endeavors. May the
good Lord bestow a blessing on all those who make it possible for our young people
                                                         to shine!

            Sincerely,

            JOHN P. KELLY, Ph.D.
            Superintendent, Pearland ISD
