Pearland thumps Dobie 49-10 in district opener

Getting the first district win was important to Pearland and the Oilers took control early against the Dobie Longhorns and came away with a dominating 49-10 District 19-6A win to improve to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in league action at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

In Pearland first two games, the Oilers used a strong and effective ground attack led by junior RB Royce Swan who had rushed for 153 and 209 yards respectively.

However, though Swan rushed for 100 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns against Dobie, the Oilers attacked the Longhorns with an effective aerial attack as QB Kaleb Smith completed 15-of-20 passing for 192 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior backup quarterback Blake Morkovsky was 2-for-2 for 48 yards and tossed a beautiful scoring pass to junior WR Joaquin Soraiz covering 37-yards in the fourth quarter.

The Oilers combined to complete 17-of-23 for 240 yards and four scores.

Dobie was forced to punt following the opening kickoff and Pearland took just over two minutes to find the endzone as Royce Swan scored on a 1-yard plunge with 6:25 remaining in the first quarter. Holden Macneish booted the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

The Longhorns punted after three-and-out and the Oilers wasted little time finding the pay station again as senior QB Kaleb Smith fired a scoring strike to WR Deshaun Washington covering 7-yards with 2:55 left in the opening period for a 14-0 advantage.

The Oilers would score one more time in the second quarter when Smith lobbed a 1-yard pass to TE Karon Johnson to make the score 21-0 with 5:04 left before halftime.

Dobie would get on the scoreboard with :29 seconds left before intermission on a 7-yard run by RB Adrian Taylor to cut the lead to 21-7.

The Oilers got the second half kickoff and preceded to go on a 5-play, 62-yard scoring drive capped off with a 28-yard scoring strike from Smith to Johnson with 9:20 left in the third period to make the score 28-7.

The Longhorns would trim the lead to 28-10 on a 25-yard field goal by Nathanael Garcia Campos at the 3:40 mark of the third quarter which would be the last time Dobie would score against the Pearland defense.

Pearland would score three more times in the final quarter as Royce Swan found the pay station on a 1-yard run, Morkovsky toss a 37-yard scoring pass to Soraiz, and junior RB Wil Torres scored on a 6-yard run to post the 49-10 final score.

The Oilers had 453 yards of total offense while holding the Longhorns to 216 total yards (194 rushing, 22 passing).

Ryan Miller had 10 carries for 45 yards while Torres had three totes for 53 yards and one TD.

Sophomore Lance Goree, Jr. was the game’s leading receiver with three catches for 78 yards. Washington had four grabs for 45 yards and one TD, Johnson had two grabs for 30 yards and two scores, Soraiz had one catch for 37 yards, Braxton Jones had two grabs for 14 yards, and Michael Shawver had two catches for 17 yards.

Macneish was 7-of-7 in the PAT department.

The annual PearBowl will be Friday, September 18 between Pearland (3-0) and Dawson (1-2) at 7:00 at Pearland ISD Stadium. This will be the 13th meeting between the two schools and each team has won six times.

The Bayway Chevrolet Parachute Team will be bringing in the Game Ball, Texas Flag, and American Flag prior to the National Anthem at 6:50 p.m.
